Associate Professor Ewa Marek, leader of the Energy Reactions and Carriers research group, has been elected to The University Council.
Her election presents an important opportunity to bring her expertise in sustainability, energy transitions, and education to one of Cambridge’s most influential governing bodies.
Dr Marek has been with the department for a decade, joining the Department of Engineering as a postdoctoral research associate before transitioning to the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CEB) in 2019. In addition to her role as associate professor, she serves as Director of Studies for the CEB Tripos at Hughes Hall, where she is also a Fellow.
Her research focuses on sustainable energy solutions and green chemical production. Among her many accolades, she received the 2024 Emerging Technologies competition award from the Royal Society of Chemistry for her work on H2Upgrade, a pioneering hydrogen production technology. In her teaching, Professor Marek has been instrumental in incorporating sustainability into the curriculum, preparing students to address global challenges in decarbonisation and climate change mitigation.
Reflecting on her election, Dr Marek said: "I am honoured to join the Council at a time when Cambridge has the opportunity to lead transformative efforts in sustainability and innovation. I look forward to working with colleagues across the University to champion impactful changes in decarbonisation, carving a path towards ethical AI use, and equality in education and research."
We also want to acknowledge the efforts of Dr Tom Matthams who also stood for election. While he was not successful this time, his commitment to representing the department is deeply valued.
Congratulations to Dr Marek as she embarks on this important role.
