Abstract:
"Emerging evidence suggests that COVID-19 causes significant damage to vascular barriers, especially the brain, and typically without directly entering the impacted organs. My seminar will discuss my lab’s work on the direct and indirect ways in which SARS-CoV-2 disrupts the blood-brain barrier and thereby increasing the incidence and severity of cerebrovascular insult including stroke and vascular dementia. Furthermore, I will present our recent identification of a common (25-40% of the global population) genetic polymorphism that dramatically increases the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection leading to Parkinson’s disease."
