'The Zilbauer group study the role of epigenetic mechanisms in regulating intestinal epithelial stem cells in development, homeostasis and disease with particular focus on inflammatory diseases. To achieve this, the Zilbauer group have created a biobank of over 1000 intestinal organoid lines derived from human patients and complex co-culturing systems that allow to compare the patterns of DNA-methylation and modification during intestinal development and inflammatory disease. His work highlights the importance of understanding foetal development to understand human diseases. '
