Join Cambridge Zero for an in-depth look at the University of Cambridge’s Sustainable Energy Materials (SEM) PhD Programme on 16th January 2025. The one-day event will provide a comprehensive overview of the SEM initiative, featuring research presentations on cutting-edge projects and academic-industry collaborations across Cambridge. Attendees will have a chance to learn more about the SEM programme, explore ways to engage, and connect with leading researchers and industry partners.

The (SEM) PhD Programme is a new, interdisciplinary initiative designed to drive innovation and industry collaboration in the field of sustainable energy materials. This 3.5-year programme unites expertise from across physical sciences and engineering at Cambridge, training PhD candidates to tackle the challenges of developing materials for energy generation, storage, and efficient use—critical to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The SEM PhD Programme invites industry partners to collaborate closely with Cambridge researchers, offering a rare opportunity to influence the direction of next-generation energy materials research. By participating, industry partners gain access to leveraged funding from the University and benefit from collaborating with multiple disciplines, ensuring students develop a broad skill set aligned with industry needs. Through this partnership, companies can co-define research projects, helping shape the skills and knowledge of future recruits and directly influencing the PhD training process to maximise recruitment potential.

By partnering with the SEM PhD Programme, companies benefit from matched University funding, early insights into commercialisation opportunities, and access to a collaborative forum for knowledge-sharing within Cambridge’s research ecosystem. Industry partners also receive streamlined access to Cambridge’s resources, including specialised labs and connections to a global alumni network, supporting long-term innovation in sustainable energy materials.

The SEM PhD Programme is a transformative opportunity for industry leaders seeking to invest in sustainable energy solutions, accelerate innovation, and cultivate talent at the forefront of energy materials science.
